The fun factor
St. Moritz is famous for its luxury and world-class skiing, but it’s also a fantastic spot for family adventures! You don’t need to spend a fortune or head up the famous Piz Nair (3,057 meters) to enjoy the stunning natural beauty. Our favorite family outing starts in Chantarella (1,991 meters), which you can easily reach by funicular, getting off at the first stop.
From there, embark on a fun-filled adventure with beautiful views over Lake St. Moritz, combined with experiences deeply rooted in Swiss literary classics: the Schellenursli story by Selina Chönz and Heidi by Johanna Spyri. Officially, these two attractions are part of separate adventures, but since they’re along the same trail, we recommend combining them into one unforgettable hike!
This is not just a hike, but an immersive journey into the world of Swiss literature—perfect for engaging the whole family in beloved stories while surrounded by breathtaking alpine scenery.

Here are our top 6 Fun Factors of Schellenursli & Heidi Hut Trail in St Moritz (Chantarella)
1. Visit Heidi Hut
This Family Adventure starts with a funicular ride up to Chantarella station. From there, there is a short walk over a gravel road to our first highlight - Heidi Hut. It is This is the original Alpöhi hut built in 1792 and used in the TV adaptation of Johanna Spyri’s famous Heidi novels. The hut was renovated in 2021, featuring wooden carvings of Heidi, Peter and Heidi,s grandpa and goats by local artist Reto Grond.
Our child is a huge Heidi fan and was thrilled to meet her "friends" and immerse herself in the story. With benches, a playground, and picnic tables nearby, we were able to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings while she played.
2. Hit the alpine playground
Just next to the Heidi Hut, there’s a small playground with a climbing structure, swings, and other classic play equipment. Combined with the charm of the Heidi Hut, it makes for an ideal spot to take a break, have a picnic, and let the kids burn off some energy while soaking in the Alpine scenery.
3. Follow Schellenursli story
From there, you can embark on a 2.5 km downhill walk that immerses you in the story of Schellenursli. This classic Swiss tale tells the story of a young boy, Ursli, who lives in the Engadine region. During the annual Chalandamarzfestival, where children ring cowbells to drive out winter, Ursli is left with the smallest bell. Determined to prove himself, he ventures to retrieve the biggest bell from his family's summer hut high in the mountains.
Along the trail, you'll find wooden sculptures depicting key scenes from the story, as well as boards with pages from the book, allowing you to follow Ursli’s journey. You’ll also come across a fun play station with bells, adding an interactive element for children as they explore this magical landscape. The combination of literature, art, and nature makes this trail a unique and engaging experience for the whole family.
Throughout the hike, you’ll catch glimpses of Lake St. Moritz and the majestic mountains in the background, enhancing the charm and magic of the adventure for the entire family.
The food factor
During our visit, we didn’t stop at any restaurants since we were well-prepared after breakfast. However, there is a charming Restaurant Salastrains along the way, conveniently located near the Heidi Hut. If you prefer to bring your own food, there are also two lovely picnic spots—one right next to the Heidi Hut and another one halfway through the Schellenursli themed section of the hike. Both are perfect for a scenic break amidst nature.
Plus, the hike starts and ends in St. Moritz, where there are plenty of restaurant options to explore. Since we stayed in nearby Silvaplana, we didn’t get the chance to try any in St. Moritz, but we’re curious—let us know your favorites if you do!
The fitness factor
The hike is easy, covering only 2.5 km, and is off-road stroller-friendly despite some gravel along the path (though not too rough).
It involves around 170 meters of elevation change. You can follow the trail downhill, as described here, or if you're looking for a bit more of a challenge, you can do it in reverse and tackle the climb with your family.
