The fun factor

Flumserberg, just an hour from Zurich, is one of the go-to ski destinations for Zurich locals. With 65 km of slopes across blue, red, and black runs, it’s a great spot for all levels. The resort has two main access points—Tannenheim and Tannenboden—both with parking and easy lift connections.

For families and beginners, Tannenboden is our top pick, and it’s where we usually go. Heads up—it gets busy on weekends, so arriving early is a good idea.

Instead of driving up, we park in Unterterzen and take the gondola, which saves about 30 minutes of driving. The area has a ski school with magic carpets and wide family-friendly slopes.

There are two ticket options—one for the full area and one just for the beginners’ zone. If we’re only skiing for a day and want to keep it relaxed, we opt for the beginners’ ticket, which includes 4 pull lifts, 1 chairlift, and around 10 slopes, plus ski school access.

This guide takes you through Tannenboden beginner's area - what to expect, where to go, and how to make the most of your ski day.

Snow adventures

  1. Learn to ski in beginners village (Kinderland)

Right next to Tannenboden gondola station, you'll find the ski school area. You can book private or group lessons for your kids—or yourself if you’d like. Lessons can be pre-booked online, but if you're more of a last-minute planner, you can also book on-site at the wooden huts by the ski area—as long as there are spots left! We managed to get a class last minute even on a busy sunny Sunday in February.

Ski classes start as early as for young children (2.5–3.5 years old) to experience their first time on skis. For kids 4 and up, you can book a morning class (10:00–12:00), afternoon class (14:00–16:00), or a full-day option. Lift tickets are not included in the price.

Beginner kids stay in the Kids' Village, practicing on magic carpets and fun obstacle courses. More advanced kids, after a short lesson on using the pull lift, can move on to pull lifts and blue slopes. Ski lift passes are not included in the price.

  1. Hit the family slopes

When skiing with kids, our favorite run is the blue slope from Chrüz to Tannenboden. You can reach it via a 4-seater chairlift, which is included in the beginners' ticket. It’s wide, gentle, and perfect for beginners, but it can get very crowded on weekends, so keep that in mind!

3. Conquer the adventure slope

Also starting from Chrüz, parallel to the blue family slope, there’s an alternative for more advanced skiers. The red slope is a bit steeper and narrower, winding through the forest—but still manageable as a next step after the blue runs. There's also the "Magic Forest" (Häxäwaldi) slope, a narrow trail with bumps and playful "magical" figures along the way. We haven’t explored it yet—our skills aren’t quite there—but from what we glimpsed between the trees, it looks like a fun little adventure!

  1. Have fun sledding

The main sledge run in Flumserberg is in a different area, running from Prodalp to Tannenheim. If sledging is your thing, that’s the spot to go—just be sure to check the snow status, as it's not always open.

But no worries if you’re staying in Tannenboden—there’s a small sledge hill there too. You (or the kids) will need to pull the sledge up for each run, or even better—just watch the kids go up and down while you take a break!

Beyond the beginners area

If the beginner slopes don’t feel like enough and you’re looking for more, you can upgrade to the full ticket, which gives access to 65 km of slopes with mostly chair lifts. Sometimes, we treat ourselves to it and explore the area while the kids are in ski school. But for a family day out, the beginner area is more than enough for us!

Where to eat: The food factor

Flumserberg has plenty of restaurants to choose from. If you're buying day tickets for kids (6+ years old), make sure to ask for the Flumserberg Taler ("Flumserberg Coin")—a CHF 5.00 voucher that can be used at various restaurants across the resort.

Our two go-to spots:

A buffet-style eatery, great for a quick and casual meal. We go there when we want something fast, though it gets quite crowded at lunchtime. Sometimes, we arrive early to beat the rush and even start the day with breakfast there before hitting the slopes.

For something more special, we go to Restaurant Chrüz—located at the top of the chairlift. It offers both indoor and outdoor seating and a table-served menu. To avoid the rush, we usually head there a bit before or after lunchtime.

In total, there are 28 restaurants in the area, so if you're looking for something different, you can explore them here.
