The fun factor
Sattel-Hochstuckli, known as Family Mountain, is one of our favorite family destinations. It has everything for a fun day out, including a bouncy castle park, mountain slides, family restaurants, picnic spots, and a suspension bridge. Even if you just hang out near the gondola station, it's worth the trip (we've done that a few times!).
For more adventure, the Goat Trail (Geissä Wäg) offers a stroller-friendly hike, with fun interactive stations. You can return the same way making it a 5.2 km walk or complete the scenic 5.6 km loop via the Engelstock Trail. Or try out an alternative with the 2 km Rondos Scavenger Hunt, which includes a suspension bridge.
We've detailed all the activities in this article to help you choose the best options for your family.
Here are our top 6 Fun Factors of Sattel-Hochstuckli Family Mountain
Sattel-Hochstuckli Goat & Engelstock Trail
5.6 km circular hike: 2.6 km themed path (Goat Trail) & 3 km panoramic walk (Engelstock Trail)
1. Become a goat-pro and maybe win a prize
Pick up a free "Geissa Büechli" activity book at the bottom or top gondola station. Inside, you'll find a description of the hike, an overview map, and details for the goat quiz. The 2.6 km themed part of the trail, which is part of a 5.6 km total hike, starts just next to the Mostelberg gondola station and takes you through 7 adventure stations with quiz boards in English and German. Older kids can answer questions and record the letters in the activity book for a chance to win a prize. Here’s a tip for younger kids: if they’re still learning to write, you can mark dots in the shape of each letter for them to connect and complete!
2. Explore fun challenges and keep the adventure going!
Next to each of the 7 quiz boards, you’ll find a fun play station featuring activities like a memory game, a barefoot walk, and guessing objects hidden in holes. Kids can also balance a labyrinth board, play music on goat bells, run in a hamster wheel, move blocks to form a picture, and learn what goats eat. These interactive stations are well-designed, engaging for children, and a great motivator to keep them excited and moving along the trail.
3. Close the loop in the Engelstock Trail
When you're done with the themed part of the Goat Trail, you have two options: retrace your steps for a total of 5.2 km, mostly flat, or follow the Engelstock Trail, completing a 5.6 km total loop with a slight uphill climb and the option to cross the suspension bridge at the end. Both are stroller-friendly. We always recommend taking the loop, as the views are stunning, and the sight of the bouncy castle park at the end is a perfect motivator for kids to keep going!
ALTERNATIVE HIKE: Rondos Scavenger Hunt
2 km hike including Skywalk suspension bridge
If you’d prefer a shorter walk instead of the Goat & Engelstock Trails, consider the Rondos Scavenger Hunt. We did it in winter and loved it! This 2 km off-road stroller friendly walk features a themed treasure hunt led by the Rondos—four adorable gondola mascots that guide you on an adventure. The route also crosses the 374-meter Skywalk suspension bridge. It’s mega fun and perfect for families with younger kids! More here.
Sattel-Hochstuckli Rondos Playland
Things to do just next to the top gondola station (Mostelberg)
5. Bounce, bounce, bounce!
Just next to the top gondola station, there’s a bouncy castle park, with around eight different bouncy castles, including a pirate ship, gingerbread house, cow barn, and circus. It also features trampolines and is available at an extra cost - check out our "value factor" section for details. The park opens later than the gondola, so we always save it as a reward after the hike. It’s amazing how our kid gets an instant energy boost as soon as we reach it, no matter how tired she was just moments before!
6. Enjoy the Mountain Slides
Next to the bouncy castle park, there are two types of slides:
Summer Toboggan Run ("Stuckli Run") – A 600-meter mountain slide where you control the speed. Suitable for kids aged 2 and up (with an adult).
Tubing Run – A 120-meter track where you slide freely, making it ideal for kids aged 5 and above, as the speed can't be controlled.
Both slides have a system that brings you back to the starting point for another go!
The food factor
There are many family friendly restaurants along the trail and here are our top three that we have tried out.
Just next to the Mostelberg (top) gondola station is our favorite all-you-can-eat Sunday brunch spot—Berggasthaus Mostelberg. You can even purchase a combined gondola and brunch ticket to save some money. Whenever we head to Sattel, the promise of this brunch is the perfect motivator for Dad to get up early and head into the mountains! They also offer delicious all-day food options, plus a small play corner to keep the kids entertained.
About halfway through the Goat Themed part of the hike, you'll come across Engelstockweid Beizli—a small café-style spot with its own cheese dairy and self-service shop. We like to stop here for a drink while our kid has a blast on the trampoline (she never misses a chance to try one out!).
The last stop on the goat-themed part of the hike is Ziegenhof Blüemlisberg—a goat farm known for its goat milk-based products. Our favorite is the goat milk ice cream, which truly has a unique taste! The farm is home to over 100 goats, with various grazing areas around the property. If you don't see the goats, they're likely grazing further up the mountain.
Along the trail, you'll also come across Mostler’s Q-Hof, which looks very inviting, though we haven't had the chance to try it yet. Plus, there are also many barbecue spots if you prefer to bring your own food.
The fitness factor
The goat-themed part of the hike is 2.6 km and mostly flat. From there, you can either return the same way, making it a total of 5.2 km or continue along the Engelstock Loop Trail (5.6 km), which includes some additional uphill and downhill sections (168 meters elevation change).
The trail is easy, mostly on gravel road. It is suitable for off-road strollers with big wheels.
