The fun factor

Oberiberg, located in Ybrig area and part of the Hoch-Ybrig ski resort, has become one of our favorite winter spots with the kids. It’s small, easy to navigate, and has direct access from the parking lot—no complicated logistics. There’s a dedicated area where little ones can ease into skiing or have fun sledding. For anyone not skiing, there is a 2.4 km scenic walk with marble rolling stations.

Just keep in mind that this area isn’t connected to the main Hoch-Ybrig ski slopes, so if you plan to leave the kids to learn while you ski, you’ll need to drive about 10 minutes to Hoch-Ybrig Weglosen.

Here are our top 3 Fun Factors of the Oberiberg snow adventures

1. Learn to ski

Oberiberg is a small, straightforward ski area that’s great for families just starting out with skiing. With direct access from the parking lot, it keeps logistics simple—no hauling gear across long distances.

It has 2 T-bar lifts, 2 conveyor belts, and a carousel, offering plenty of options for beginners. More info here. You can teach or supervise the kids yourself or sign them up for ski school Hoch-Ybrig, which offers both group and private lessons.

Beginners can start on the conveyor belts and work their way up to the T-bar lift as they gain confidence. Just note the limited opening hours. When our daughter was 4, we usually kept skiing sessions short—just 1-2 hours—to keep it enjoyable for her. Now that she’s a bit older, we’re gradually extending the time on the slopes. After skiing, we always switch to other activities to keep the day fun and varied.

2. Go sledding

In the same area where you can ski, there’s a small slope perfect for sledding. It’s not too steep, making it ideal for younger kids. You can bring your own sledge or rent one from the shop near the parking lot. For extra fun (and less effort), you can use the "magic carpets" conveyor belts to ride up and sledge down—or simply walk up if you prefer. For us, it’s the perfect way to wrap up the day.

3. Hike

What makes this place stand out is the all-year-round 2.4 km hike with a gentle 75 m elevation change, starting right at the parking lot.

The trail starts on a paved road through the town with a gentle uphill climb, then transitions into a gradual downhill stretch through open fields and along a gravel path. If there is no snow, it could be done with very good off-road strollers.

About 1.2 km in, you’ll find a marble vending machine where you can purchase a marble —just make sure to bring a 2 CHF coin, as it doesn’t accept Twint or 1 CHF coins, and it doesn’t give change. From there, the fun begins with marble rolling installations along the path, perfect for entertaining kids (and adults!). Our little one loves these and is always eager to keep going just to see the next one. This trail is a fantastic option to keep non-skiers involved in the day’s fun.

If there’s heavy snow, it’s worth checking with the tourist office to confirm the hike is open.

The views factor

Although there are no high mountain views, we still found the scenery very charming—especially when the hills are blanketed in snow.

The value factor

Skilift Roggen / St. Johannesberg:

    • Adults: 28 CHF

    • Kids: 23 CHF

  • Half-day-card

    • Adults: 23 CHF

The food factor

There are two restaurants in the area, one of which is Restaurant Roggen, conveniently located right on the slopes. It features a small play corner for kids and an extensive children’s menu.

The other option is the restaurant at the Roggenstock Lodge Hotel, just next to the parking, which offers a slightly more upscale atmosphere.

There’s also a cozy café and bakery in the area, known for its delicious cakes. We usually can’t resist bringing some home to enjoy later!

SKIING & SLEDDING:

MARBLE HIKE:

  • Start & end: Parking Roggen

  • There are no signs for the hike, so here’s how to find your way:

    • Start at the Parkplatz Skilift Roggen.

    • Walk along Kirchenstrasse toward the church.

    • Turn onto Guggernstrasse, and after about 200 meters, turn left onto Michelsmattstrasse.

    • Continue to Karlfaberweg and then onto Jessenenstrasse, which loops you back to Parkplatz Skilift Roggen.

For the first part of the hike, leading to the marble rolling stations, use this Google Maps link as a guide. It’ll help you stay on track! From there, just follow the marble rolling stations and when you get down to the main road, turn left and this will bring you back to the starting point.

  • Ascent / Descent: 75 m

  • Length: ca. 2.4 km

  • Duration: 1 hr

  • The hike is stroller-friendly as long as there’s no snow. However, if there is snow on the trail, we don’t recommend using strollers.
