The fun factor
Zugerberg, a beautiful mountain near Zug, is not only a natural retreat but also the home of Zugiblubbi, a playful woodland character who takes families on an exciting 5.4 km adventure hike. The trail is packed with fun, featuring a background story, a quest to uncover a secret password, interactive play stations, and barbecue spots along the way.
We’ve now explored it in every season, and each time has brought its own unique charm. From spring to autumn, the trail offers two options: a shorter route for those without strollers and a slightly longer stroller-friendly detour.
In the winter, going with strollers can be challenging as the paths are often covered in snow. However, if there’s enough snow, you can bring a sledge for the kids—just be prepared to carry it on a few sections. With its engaging activities for children and easy access via the funicular, this trail remains one of our family’s favorite adventures, no matter the season.
Here are our top 5 Fun Factors of the Zugiblubbi adventure trail and treasure hunt near Zug
1. Uncover a secret password
At the base station of the funicular, pick up a Zugiblubbi adventure card with a map and a pencil. Along the trail, find nine diamond posts (Diamentenposten) with hidden letters—just be aware they are in a different order than how they should be written on your map. Write the letters on your map, and if you find them all, drop the completed card in the mailbox next to the top funicular station to maybe win a prize!
2. Discover the Zugiblubbi story
We love hikes with a backstory, and this one doesn’t disappoint! The Zugiblubbi Adventure Trail tells the enchanting story of Zugiblubbi, the friendly spirit of Zugerberg on a quest to recover stolen diamonds hidden by mischievous cave dwarfs. As families journey along the trail, they uncover parts of this story at various posts, with narratives available in both German and English. The English versions are presented by Mr. Money, a cheerful character who guides explorers through the adventure.
3. Discover fun play areas along the trail
Along the way, you'll encounter numerous play areas that make the hike even more exciting for kids. Next to each diamond post (marked on the map with a diamond and a number), there’s also a play station offering unique activities like playing a giant xylophone, exploring a whimsical mushroom forest, walking along a barefoot path, navigating a labyrinth, and more. We found these play stations to be thoughtfully designed and a great way to keep the adventure engaging. Our little one was thrilled to keep going, eager to discover what the next station would bring!
There are also a few climbing structures scattered along the trail, adding an extra layer of fun to the adventure. Some are located right next to the storyboards, while others stand on their own, offering spontaneous opportunities for kids to climb, play, and explore.
4. Hit the playgrounds
There are three playgrounds along the trail, each offering a perfect spot for kids to burn off energy. The first one, marked with the letter F on the map, is located in a scenic field and features swings, climbing structures, a zip line, and two barbecue spots with wood provided. Barbecuing is available year-round, and in winter, we love bringing marshmallows to roast—it’s a magical experience to enjoy them surrounded by snow!
The second one is along the trail, near diamond #4, tucked away in the forest with a lovely view. It features a barbecue area, marble rolling setups (complete with marbles), games, and a swing. It’s our favorite spot, thanks to the cozy lounge chairs and stunning scenery.
There’s also another playground located next to Restaurant Hintergeissboden, which is a great spot to relax. Just note that the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The views factor
The funicular ride and the start of the hike boast stunning views of Lake Zug. The views are equally beautiful in the winter and in the summer.
Most of the trail meanders through the forest, with occasional stretches across open fields.
The fitness factor
In the summer, the trail offers two options: a stroller-friendly route, which takes about 30 minutes longer due to a small detour, and a shortcut that isn’t stroller friendly—see the map details. The paths are generally easy and mostly flat, with gentle uphills and downhills (92 m).
The trail includes forest paths, dirt roads, and some paved sections. The shortcut features a path with thick, exposed roots and some incline, making it not suitable for strollers.
In the winter, the natural paths are typically covered with snow and are not stroller-friendly. However, the paved road is usually cleared of snow. The trail remains easy to walk and is suitable for kids who are comfortable walking distances over 5 km.

The food factor
We love bringing our own food and enjoying a picnic, especially when picnic and barbecue spots are available. On the Zugiblubbi trail, there are two great options, both equipped with tables, barbecues (wood provided), and stunning views over the fields.
The first spot, Schattwäldli, is located next to post F and is slightly larger, offering more play equipments. The second spot is near diamond post 4, nestled in the forest for a cozier atmosphere with forest shade and play areas. Both are perfect for families looking to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
There are also two restaurants along the trail, and we tried ice cream at both—equally delicious!
The first, Restaurant Zugerberg, is conveniently located right next to the top funicular station. It’s a great spot to kick off your adventure with a coffee or tea or reward yourself with a treat after the hike.
The second restaurant, Hintergeissboden, located toward the end of the trail, is perfectly placed to break up a longer stretch without play station. We love stopping here for ice cream to recharge before finishing the hike. It also features a playground, making it a hit with kids.
